Schertz has an advantage most of its neighbors don't. Since 2003, the city's water has come from the Carrizo Aquifer, so homeowners here haven't had to ration lawn watering the way cities on the Edwards Aquifer have. A natural lawn still asks a lot, though. The city's year-round water conservation plan keeps sprinklers off between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., a St. Augustine lawn drinks heavily from May through September, and every gallon lands on the utility bill.
Artificial grass ends that routine. There are no sprinklers to program, no mower to gas up, and no fertilizer or weed treatments to buy, and the lawn looks the same in late August as it does in April. Rain passes straight through the turf into a rock base, so you don't get puddles in the yard or mud at the back door.
Schertz Turf Pros handles the whole project. We take out the old lawn, build and compact the base, fit the turf, and finish every edge. The base gets most of our time, because it decides whether the lawn still sits flat and drains well ten summers from now. Some people call it synthetic grass, fake grass, or astro turf. Whatever the name, the current products are softer and more natural in color than the turf you may remember.

Turf built for dogs. It drains fast, rinses clean with a hose, and holds up to fetch, fence running, and digging without wearing down to bare dirt.
See Pet Turf
A practice green a few steps from the back door. We shape each one to the yard, with real breaks, cups where you want them, and fringe for chipping.
See Putting Greens
Durable turf for apartment communities, HOA common areas, storefronts, patios, and playgrounds. It trims irrigation and mowing costs and keeps the property green.

We come out, measure, look at the slope and where water runs, and ask how you use the yard. You handle the turf samples yourself and get a quote in writing.
Step 2
The old grass and several inches of soil come out. We set the grade and compact crushed rock in layers. How well this step is done decides how the lawn ages.
Step 3
We roll out the turf, trim it to each border and curve, join the seams so they disappear, and fasten the perimeter.
Step 4
Infill is worked into the turf, the blades are power-brushed upright, and the debris leaves with us. The lawn is ready to use that day.

| New sod | Artificial turf | |
|---|---|---|
| First month | Daily watering until the roots take, all of it outside the 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. window | Ready to use the day it's installed |
| Summer water | Heavy irrigation from May into October | An occasional rinse |
| Mowing and edging | Weekly through the growing season | None |
| Fertilizer and weed control | Several rounds a year | None |
| Late summer | Thin, stressed, or brown in the hottest spots | The same green as spring |
| After heavy rain | Soggy for days on clay | Drains through and dries quickly |
| Shade, dogs, and foot traffic | Bare patches and worn trails | Full, even coverage |
Sod wins on the day you buy it. From then on, it costs you water, mowing, treatments, and patching, and the clay and the heat still thin it out. Turf costs more up front and then takes most of those expenses off the list.
Schertz sits at the southern end of the Texas blackland prairie, and most yards here are built on dark, heavy clay. It swells when it's wet and shrinks and cracks when it's dry, which is why watering the foundation is a summer chore in this part of the state. Lawns ride the same movement. They heave, settle, and pull away from the slab and the fence line.
The ground changes a little from one side of town to the other. Near Cibolo Creek and the two branches of Dietz Creek, yards sit lower, and water takes longer to clear after a storm. In the northern part of town and up along I-35, the clay gets thinner, and white chalk can sit anywhere from a few inches to a few feet below the surface.
Turf performs well on all of it when the base suits the site. On deep clay, we take out more soil and replace it with compacted rock so the surface stays put. In low, slow-draining spots, we add depth or a drain. Where chalk is close to the surface, we shape the grade and fill the low spots. We look at your soil during the estimate and explain the base plan before you decide.

Schertz Turf Pros was started on a simple belief: a turf lawn ought to look as good in year ten as it does the afternoon it goes in. Getting there takes patient base work, a product matched to how the yard is used, and a crew that leaves the place cleaner than it found it.
If you're outside the Schertz area, our affiliated turf teams serve homeowners in New Braunfels, San Marcos, and Kyle and Buda with the same installation standards.
Turf is priced by the square foot. Your total depends on the size of the area, the turf you pick, and how much digging and base rock the yard needs. We measure on site and give you a free written quote.
Not really. Astro turf was a short, stiff surface built for stadiums, and the name stuck. The turf we install in yards has longer, softer blades in mixed greens with a tan thatch layer, so it looks like a healthy lawn.
Water is only part of what a lawn costs. Turf also ends the mowing, fertilizing, weed control, and reseeding, and it takes the summer spike out of your utility bill. It stays green in shade and on heavy clay, where grass tends to thin out no matter how much you water.
Not to stay green. A quick rinse now and then clears dust and pollen or cools the surface, and pet areas get hosed off more often. You won't need a sprinkler schedule.
A turf lawn with a solid base and UV-stabilized fibers lasts for many years. Good drainage and an occasional brushing do the most to keep it looking fresh.
In direct afternoon sun it warms up, much like a patio or a wood deck. Heat-reducing turf and infill take the edge off, shade does more, and a short spray from the hose cools it in seconds.
Yes, if the base is built for clay. We dig deeper, bring in more rock, and compact it in layers so the surface stays level while the soil underneath swells and shrinks.
Yes. It's a soft, even surface that needs no fertilizer or weed killer and never turns to mud. For dogs, we suggest pet turf with fully permeable backing and odor-control infill.
Most home projects take one to three days, depending on the size of the yard and the prep it needs. Your quote includes the schedule.
